The thorny issue of the full responsibility and total care, on behalf of those families with people with disabilities, brought to a careful consideration the matter of the recognition of the evolutionary development and dignity of their adult child. The project aims at improving the life’s quality of people with disabilities through actions on the family in order to identify the problem, detect and realize adequate and functional paths to overcome obstacles and barriers. At the same time, some trial periods of assisted independent life, in apartments far from the family were scheduled and organized with the sons.

“FA RE” - FAmiglie in REte
Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus Foundation
The Project “FARE Famiglie in Rete carried out by Don Gnocchi Onlus Foundation aims at improving the life quality of users with disabilities. Above all it intends fighting back the situations of marginalization and social isolation, by involving the majority of parents in order to help them “shake off guilt-feelings” that prevent them from “ enjoying the pleasure to think about themselves”. Here are the specific goals: to favour a cultural change, where the family foresees interventions aimed at recognizing, supporting and encouraging the passage from passive individuals in need of assistance to active people that are able to take possession of a dimension that is parallel to the one of their parents; to enable paths of self mutual aid by strengthening a culture that facilitates mutual help between families whose individuals have disabilities and by recognizing the family as a qualified subject to: evaluate, take charge and give answers; to be able to stake their own resources and manage those made available by other people; to be partners of the interventions and not passive recipients.
