Eldery with Disabilities

The project “Home Health Service”

Municipality of Castel Sant'Angelo

The Municipality of Castel Sant’Angelo, in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross – Provincial Unit of Rieti, has realized an initiative of “Ready Medicine”, that foresees: - the delivery of medicines prescribed by the doctor to the persons with disabilities and to the elderly; - the transportation to Health and Hospital facilities, both by car and by ambulance. The projetc Home Health Service includes among its activities training courses for first-aid volunteers, that will compose a local unit of the Red Cross. The Municipality of Castel Sant’Angelo has requested Trenitalia (Italian Railway Company)the loan for use of the railway station of Canetra, which remained unused for many years, with the aim of turning it into the new operations station of the Red Cross.

Immigrants with Disabilities

Prism for the aid relations

Municipality of Turin - Department for Social Services and Relations with the Local Health Authorities - Department for People with Disabilities - Passepartout Service, in collaboration with the voluntary associations

The Department for Social Services - Interventions and Integrated Serrvices for Motor Disability/Passepartout - the City of Turin offers the citizens with disabilities a large variety of opportunities and different activities, through which it examines and monitors also the change in the demand and needs of citizens. In this context, Passepartout Service has created and enabled, in collaboration with some associations and training agencies, "Prism for the aid relations": a very articulated project which aims at meeting, in a customized way, the necessities of every individual. More specifically, the Disability and Immigration Service offers support and aid to the people that live in this situation, with the aim of facilitating the information retrival process in the field of helth care services' access, in order to provide an answer to the difficulties bound with social and cultural barriers.

The Laboratory “Piero Gabrielli”, run by professional of drama and school, in collaboration with rehabilitation experts, addresses both young people with disabilities and those without them. The aim of the Laboratory is one of fostering a path of integration between young people with and without difficulties through the theatrical instrument, by involving different professionals and institutes.

Alchemy: is it possible to feel good at school?

The project aims at providing an answer to the needs of growth, learning, and training of children by welcoming and mixing diversity, facilitating in this way the inclusion of foreign kids, of kids with critical social backgrounds, with disabilities or with learning disorders. It works for the building of the individual’s awareness of his/her own characteristics, opportunities, complications during the growing process and in the interaction with the others; it smoothes the active learning paths of comprehension and critique; it contributes to the respect, protection and blossom of the “very delicate force” existing in every young person. It aids prevention in terms of risk factors’ recognition and of a search for a collective wellbeing essential for the health of the individual.

Smart Inclusion

The project Smart Inclusion aims at improving the stay in hospital of long-term young patients by creating a virtual technological bridge able to reduce the social, human and cultural distance of those children who are hospitalized in the Department of Paediatric Oncohematology and Cardiosurgery. Smart Inclusion provides them with the possibility to actively take part to lessons through distance learning, to visualize entertaining channels and find moments of amusement thanks to the many toys the are supplied with. Furthermore, this project allows the physicians to use advanced tools in support of the patients’ treatment processes, like for instance through a practical access to the patient’s medical record.

DPI (Disabled People´s International) Italia ONLUS (A Non-Profit Socially Engaged Organisation)

The project has sought to identify tools and methodologies to combat the multiple discrimination and violence experienced by women with disabilities. ‘Empowerment’ was identified as the most appropriate aspect, and considered achievable via the exchange and dissemination of best practices, tools, methodolgies and material; self-defence of women with disabilities should be encouraged and finally, the understanding of National and European institutions about the aim of this initiative to combat the increase in violence.

Methodology of working inclusion

Local Health Unit 3 Genoa – Complex facility for the assistance of the people with disabilities – Simple facility Study Centre for the working integration of the people with disabilities

The Study Centre is a service that promotes and manages projects of working integration for people with disabilities, through a network activity with the social-health territorial services, the local facilities and the local firms.The projects have a rehabilitating function, through opportunities of easy and costumized access in the productive system. The projects are various and are grouped in two macro categories according to the objective: 1.Some of the projects aim at the working inclusion according to the law n. 68/99 and are financed by the Province of Genoa on the basis of a conventional relation. 2. Some other projects involve the people with serious disabilities and aim at a feasible integration, without the objective of being hired.

Project DAMA (Disabled Advanced Medical Assistance). Reception and Medical Assistance for the persons with serious disabilities

San Paolo Hospital of Milan

DAMA is an operating pavilion of San Paolo Hospital of Milan able to offer reception and medical assistance to the people with serious disabilities, especially to those who suffer from communication deficit, in this way providing with a quick answer integrated with the medical and surgical problems of the users of the service, through the medical and nursing personnel at disposal. DAMA concretely encourages the right to health of the persons with serious disabilities.

Project Snoezelen Rooms

Educational Centre “Fortunata Gresner”, held by the Congregation “Suore della Compagnia di Maria” of Verona

The project originated from the need, shared by the various professionals working in the school,to find training aid, strategies and theoretical indications in order to interact with children and young people in a more effective way. After having broadened our knowledge of social pedagogy, based on the Basal Stimulations of Professor Frohlich,we had the possibility to become acquainted with Multisensorial Rooms at the Holman Centre of Cannero (VB).

The project aims at implementing welcoming and coaching activities in order to favour job inclusion of people with mental disabilities, in the framework of open-ended jobs, former law 68/99. The final goal of this programme is to fight the social exclusion of people with mental disabilities, by promoting rehabilitation and inclusion processes of the disabled person.

Advanced Class for Disability Manager

Bioethics, Human Sciences and ICF to design and connect the networks with the people with disabilities

The advanced Class for Disability Manager is a university degree aiming at providing the knowledge and the cultural instruments in order to coordinate and implement networking activities and working plans for the people with disabilities. The expertise of this figure is grounded on the psychosocial model of disability and must aim at promoting participation. The disability Manager must take into account that the person with disabilities has no "special needs", she/he rather needs to use "special means" to satify them.

Association of mentally impaired Children Sardinia

The main goal of the project, regarding the method and the procedure, is the support to the families, the fostering to take charge of their responsibilities, their active participation (the association deals with families affected by serious, when not very serious situations of disabilities). Family support implies, in its social function, the involvement in relations with the institutions, the administrators, the public opinion and all the social actors in order to make people more aware and pave the way for a new culture of real inclusion of children with disabilities.

“FA RE” - FAmiglie in REte “Independent Life”

Within the “FA RE” project, a special attention was given to the complex and difficult dimension of the “AFTER US”. The thorny issue of the full responsibility and total care, on behalf of those families with people with disabilities, brought to a careful consideration the matter of the recognition of the evolutionary development and dignity of their adult child. The project aims at improving the life’s quality of people with disabilities through actions on the family in order to identify the problem, detect and realize adequate and functional paths to overcome obstacles and barriers. At the same time, some trial periods of assisted independent life, in apartments far from the family were scheduled and organized with the sons.

“FA RE” - FAmiglie in REte

The Project “FARE Famiglie in Rete carried out by Don Gnocchi Onlus Foundation aims at improving the life quality of users with disabilities. Above all it intends fighting back the situations of marginalization and social isolation, by involving the majority of parents in order to help them “shake off guilt-feelings” that prevent them from “ enjoying the pleasure to think about themselves”. Here are the specific goals: to favour a cultural change, where the family foresees interventions aimed at recognizing, supporting and encouraging the passage from passive individuals in need of assistance to active people that are able to take possession of a dimension that is parallel to the one of their parents; to enable paths of self mutual aid by strengthening a culture that facilitates mutual help between families whose individuals have disabilities and by recognizing the family as a qualified subject to: evaluate, take charge and give answers; to be able to stake their own resources and manage those made available by other people; to be partners of the interventions and not passive recipients.

“Independent Living” is an integrated housing project aiming at providing an independent and self-supporting life to people with disabilities. The programme is based on the creation of paths of housing autonomy. The idea is that inside mini flats in a “block” people with disabilities can find the assistance, the services and the social relations they need so that in case they live alone in their own apartments they can lead an independent life.

The project aims at supporting the spreading and consolidation of the Reinforcement Board in the region of Lombardy. This is an institute that was introduced by the national law 6/2004 which guarantees the representation and legal protection especially to the most fragile citizens.
In concrete terms, every province in the region of Lombardy should be equipped with supportive services through the creation of a stable network among the associations so to find, develop and accompany these operators for disadvantaged people and interact with families and local institutions.

Individual therapeutic and rehabilitation projects sustained by the health budget (PTRI/BdS)

Local Health Service – Azienda Sanitaria Locale (ASL), Caserta

Individual therapeutic and rehabilitation projects (PTRI) sustained by the health budget (BdS) are integrated initiatives aimed at meeting needs that require both health care and social protection. PTRI are addressed to users with social disabilities caused by psycho-organic diseases or social marginality and exclusion. These projects have four areas of concern, corresponding to the principal health factors (education and work; home and social milieu; affections and sociality; expression and learning), and foresee three levels of intensity (high, medium and low). They are co-managed with the public sector health service (ASL/City administrations) and private social operators selected from a specific roll (compiled following a constantly open public announcement).

Progetto Match

Don Carlo Gnocchi Onlus Foundation

The Match IT programme is addressed to people with disabilities who require entering the job market through the job placing system as defined by article 2 of Law 68/99. It provides a computerised information referencing system that crosses demand and offer on the basis of a detailed analysis of the interaction between the characteristics of the individual and the structural, social and operative characteristics of the job milieu and position the system relies on two data banks. One refers to the person with disability who is available for work while the other to the companies that offer the job. A devise allows the information contained in the two DBs to be matched the information relating to the companies – information drawn from targeted and structured interviews – are collected in the Company Data Bank (CDB). Information concerning people with disabilities – information gathered through the protocols of Match and from the International classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and from specific interviews – are collected in the User Data Bank (UDB. The software allows the job skills and functioning characteristics of the person with disabilities to be crossed. This allows the compiling of a list of candidates from which the company can select the profile that best suits its needs.

The service of the socio-health assistant was born in july 2004 on proposal of the Ministry of health, the Region of Lombardy Higher Health Institute The aim of the project is to catch espresse and not-expressed needs by the weaker elderly people which live in unconfortable areas of Milan metropolitan area areas. Project

To overcome prejudices and stereotypes, to enhance experiences and best practices, to spread information through concrete initiatives on the territory in order to allow for a full participation of the people with disabilities. This is the goal of the project “Disability and Social Exclusion” (DSE) co-financed by the European Commission. Through territorial and communication plans, the programme aims at carrying out a real cultural change for the overcoming of discriminatory behaviours towards people with disabilities, that are still widespread in our country.
